Broadway St. - Curtis Music Hall The upper floors of the Curtis Music Hall, an architectural gem in Uptown Butte, have been unoccupied for over 50 years, but that is about to change. Renovation into modern apartments, while retaining historical details, is nearly complete. Constructed in 1892 at a cost of $25,000, the third floor was arranged to be a music and dancing hall, 42 by 100 feet and laid with hardwood floor. The music hall dream was short-lived; a short newspaper notice in December 1894 stated that “Curtis music hall is being changed into a lodging house. It will contain 52 rooms, all of which will be heated by steam.” Various retail establishments, eateries and saloons occupied the first floor in the building’s early years, with offices on the second floor and lodging on the upper two floors. Looking at the floor joists, one can infer that this 1895 house started out as a 12’x15’ mining hut, with 3 additions added on making it the 650 +/- ft2 house Sean Keuch purchased from Butte-Silver Bow in late 2020. While a full-time student, artist at The Main Stope and subbing at Butte High, Keuch renovated the Sutter house from 650 ft2 to 1,300 ft2. With much help from his dad, Keuch gained these square feet by lifting the house a foot on the south side, digging a full basement under the floating house, pouring a previously non-existent foundation, and extending the building south 7 feet. Broadway St. - Covellite Theater This imposing building in the Norman Gothic style served as the First Presbyterian Church from 1896 until 1957. With its floor sloping toward the worship area at the front, the building had limited potential for reuse, but was ideally suited as a theater space. The Old Garden Court Theater operated there for two summer seasons in the early 1960s. Its next revival happened from 1985-1996 after the county had acquired the building for back taxes. Under the nonprofit “Broadway 215” much stabilization work was done, and the stained glass windows were “temporarily” removed, but plans to have them restored and reinstalled never materialized. In 2005 the theater underwent another remodeling to become the Covellite Theater and the marquee was added at that time, but the theater troupe folded after three seasons. Granite St. Completed in 1908, the Arthur and Bertha Schimpf House shines as a rare architectural gem in Butte, the city’s only example of the Mission Style. Popularized in California in the 1890s, the style rarely appeared outside the Southwest. Hallmark Mission elements exhibited on the exterior include smooth stucco‑like walls, shaped parapets, ornamental windows, and a broad front porch set off center. Interior finishes continue the high level of craftsmanship. At the time he and wife Bertha became the house’s first residents, Arthur Schimpf co-owned Butte’s legendary Atlantic Saloon, claimed to possess the longest bar in the world. After inheriting a small fortune, the Schimpfs sold the saloon and left Butte. Subsequent long‑term owners included J. P. Oppenheimer of Symon’s Department Store and dentist Sami Rafish. Current owners, Christy and Michael McGrath, have called the house home for fifty years. Excelsior St. The exterior of this handsome four-plex, with its Tuscan columns, second story porches, transom windows with diamond shaped panes, and attractive brickwork along the roofline, remains relatively unchanged since its construction 120 years ago. In July of 1906, Joseph Durrer purchased the vacant lot from the Volunteer Mining Company, which had created a subdivision of the Volunteer Lode after mining there proved unprofitable. Durrer paid $800, and in November of that same year, Durrer sold the property for $4000, so presumably 1906 is the year when this four-plex was constructed. This was a great boom period in Butte’s history, and many similar apartments were constructed to house a growing middle class.
