Brick Repointing Workshop, June 21, 2014, 9 am-noon

Butte Citizens for Preservation and Revitalization (CPR) is offering a workshop on brick repointing. The workshop will be on Saturday, June 21 , 9:00 - noon. Workshop location is 843 South Colorado St. Participants will receive informational materials to take home with them. Cost is $5.00 or free to Butte CPR members.

Over time moisture can cause deterioration of mortar joints between bricks. The brick on historic buildings in Butte is called "common brick," and is softer than modern brick. For that reason, repair and maintenance of the brick requires different materials than that normally sold as pre-mixed products. With practice, building owners can do a professional job repointing that will last a lifetime.

Attendees will get a full explanation of materials and tools needed to do simple brick repair. Please wear appropriate clothes for outdoor work. Because materials and tools will be supplied for the hands-on work, please contact Larry Smith before the workshop so we can provide enough materials info@buttecpr.org or 491-0744.

2013 Historic Rock Wall and Foundation Repair Workshop

Many homes and commercial structures in Butte have foundations made up of rocks. Masonry foundation blocks were set in mortar. Over time weather, wind, and especially moisture can cause deterioration and requires maintenance. The term "repointing" comes from the masonry term "point," which means to fill or refill and finish the joints of brickwork or stonework with mortar. Most historic exterior brick walls or foundation walls will need partial or full repointing every 50-70 years. Mortar is designed to be an expansion joint and vapor membrane around masonry blocks so the mortar must be weaker and more permeable than the blocks. With practice, building owners can do a professional job that will last a lifetime.

Butte Citizens for Preservation and Revitalization is offering a workshop on historic rock wall/foundation repair. This is a two-part workshop. On Thursday evening, July 18, there will be an introductory session from 6:30-8:00 pm. The hands-on work session is scheduled for Saturday morning, July 20 from 9:00 to noon. Workshop location is 82 E. Park, across from Rediscoveries. Participants will receive informational materials to take home with them. Cost is $5.oo or free to Butte CPR members.

For more information call Larry at 491-8623 or email at info@buttecpr.org.

ARCHIVES SALVAGE WORK PARTY - TUESDAY SEPT. 16, 4:00 PM. PLEASE HELP!!
The second Brick Workshop for 2008 is scheduled for Thursday Sept 18 (6-9PM) and Saturday Sept 20 (9AM-noon or later) at the Dumas - 45 E. Mercury. The workshop includes both days, and new material will be presented on each day, but you are welcome to attend only Thursday or only Saturday.
The Thursday evening session will introduce the fundamentals of historic brick maintenance and repair, and resource materials will be distributed. The Saturday morning session will be a hands-on time to do repair to a portion of the building. As the area to be repaired is on the inside, and will eventually be covered, it is a perfect opportunity to get some experience laying common brick and repointing nearby brick. At the same time, we hope to get an area stabilized before the upcoming winter!
The cost of the workshop is $10 for members or $35 for non-members (which includes a 2008 membership). For those that can stay for the entire work session on Saturday morning, we can refund your workshop fee, if you wish. Bring clothes appropriate for outside weather, as the building is not heated.
Since we need to plan for materials and tools, we would appreciate a RSVP, if possible. For more information look to the following pages on our website, ask by a reply email, or call Larry Smith at 491-8623.
